Advanced Techniques Series: Milia, Lip Blisters, & Gums

About This Lesson

Welcome to the next set of video modules on advanced painting techniques on a Caucasian baby!!! This module covers milia, lip blisters, and gums (in an open mouth baby) and is best done as a base detailing layer. I do not recommend doing this before this stage after detailing, creasing, or blushing or subsequent warming layers, as you want these to appear beneath those layers. Remember that milia is often dependent on the age of your sculpt, so milia is recommended for newborn sculpts up to about 3 weeks old. Older babies won’t have milia so feel free to skip this technique depending on your sculpt.

If you are not doing milia on your baby, feel free to skip ahead to 16 mins in to see the lip blisters and gums.

Doll sculpt in the video is “Twin B” by Bonnie Brown.

As mentioned, there is no wrong way to do milia. Sparingly or pronounced. You can also get a more red and inflamed milia by doing a layer of strawberry blush, and a layer of sweetheart rose blush spots and then applying a milia spot with the skin texture medium. You can also continue to use “Flesh 8” instead of the texture medium as well. I’ve just switched for realism.

The awl I’m using can be purchased HERE. I cannot find it for sale individually but you can contact Brenda to buy it separate from this set.
